Imagine! What it would be like if you lived in a world without gluten? So many of us have to completely avoid gluten in our food (my estimates are that over a third of the population would feel better on a gluten-free diet. The remainder would benefit with the reduction of auto-immune disease and neurological harm). Those of us who are gluten-affected have to ensure that our own environment is gluten-free. You can feel threatened and uncomfortable in the wider glutened world. However, as more and more people recognize the harmful effects of gluten on their health, we will see the unstoppable growth of gluten-free communities. The gluten revolutionIt is beyond doubt that we are living in a time of gluten revolution. On the one hand, gluten is becoming ubiquitous in our food. The amount of gluten in our bread and wheat-based products has been steadily increasing. The wheat business is trillion dollar business. How much more gluten we can be pumped into our diet? Explosion of gluten-freeOn the other hand, there has been an explosion in the gluten-free market over the last decade. Ten years ago it was difficult to find specifically labelled gluten free foods. Now, there is a rapid proliferation of specialized gluten-free shops, gluten-free aisles in supermarkets, and gluten-free menus in restaurants. The gluten-free economy is now worth billions of dollars, and increasing exponentially. How far can this trend go? These two competing forces can either clash, or work together. Could there really be such a thing as a gluten-free planet? The Gluten-Free Planet ProjectCommunity and consumer force is the only way to create a gluten-free planet. As the "gluten consciousness” of the globe increases, more and more gluten-free foods will be demanded. To meet that demand, food manufacturers will provide high quality safe foods. This will pressure the agriculture sector to grow non-gluten grains. In time, the planet will turn gluten-free. We can make this happen. |
