• Upper endoscopy (gastroscopy) is a procedure to have a look at the upper gut and to get the bowel tissue samples.
• A small bowel biopsy is done by this endoscopy procedure.
• It is done to confirm bowel damage from gluten.
• Celiac disease is currently defined by gut damage found by endoscopy.
• Colonoscopy is a lower endoscopy (looking into the rectum and colon).
• Diseases looked for include: gastro-esophageal reflux (GERD), eosinophilic esophagitis (EE), Helicobacter pylori, inflammatory bowel disease.
